Are you an empath do you easily feel the emotions around you? Wikipedia defines empathy as “the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another’s position. There are many definitions for empathy that encompass a broad range of emotional states. Types of empathy include cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and compassionate empathy.”
What does empathy mean?
The word “empath” originates from the Quechua Indian word “Qawaq” which translates to “one who sees” and from “Qaway” which translates as “to see living energy”.
Can you imagine feeling the positive and negative emotions around you? It can actually be good but also bad. When everyone around you are happy at some point and then when sadness or anger, hate and all kinds of negative feelings you also felt. It can drive you crazy if you don’t recognize what kind of gift you have as an empath.
How to cope with too much empathy?
Do not confuse the emotions of being an empath. It is a very special gift, it is a blessing. It can only be curse if you don’t know how to control it and set boundaries. It can be toxic when a person over-identifies with someone else’s feelings and directly takes them on as their own. For example, feeling anxious for a friend when they’re facing stress at work can be normal. Recognize the situation and set boundaries to not get carried away by your emotions.
Developing empathy
On a personal level, empathy gives us the ability to build social connections and important relationships with others. Empathizing can also help to regulate your own emotions and soften difficult experiences. By experiencing another’s feelings you are more aware of your emotions and become more open to experiences.
Characteristics of Empathy:
1) Good listener
2) Non-judgemental
3) Recognizes emotions in other people
4) Good to talk to and understanding of other people’s emotions
5) Will help others develop in a positive way.
What does God say about being empathetic?
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
